The State Parks, Beaches and Reserves of Coastal California

The dramatic beauty of this northern portion of the Central Coast is one of California's best kept secrets. With pristine beaches and bluff-top nature trails, this area offers the unspoiled coastlines and stunning scenic vistas you’ve always dreamed of. "Where the pines meet the sea," is a phrase often heard in reference to Cambria--an area where beautiful coastal pine forests begin to appear on the rolling hills of the central coast. The trees and the wonderful Mediterranean climate lend a quiet and serene ambiance to the area.

Not surprisingly, there are quite a few State Parks in the region. We’ve made a list of some of our favorites to help you plan your upcoming trip to California’s Central Coast.

Carmel River State Beach
Right before the headwaters of the Carmel River meet the Pacific, you’ll find a lagoon with a bird sanctuary containing many species of song birds and waterfowl. The three miles of beach here offer great opportunities for walking, picnicking and bird watching.

Point Lobos State Reserve
Point Lobos State Reserve is perfect for sightseeing, photography, painting, nature study, picnicking, SCUBA diving and trail running. The offshore area is one of the most diverse marine habitats in California. Its animals and plants are fully protected by state law from any disturbance, and divers should not be surprised to see 70 foot-high kelp forests, seals, sea otters and whales.

Garrapata State Park
California Gray whales pass close by during their yearly migration. This park offers two miles of beachfront with a wide array of coastal vegetation including Redwood groves. A hike and a 50-foot climb will yield a stunning view of the Pacific.

Point Sur State Historic Park
Weekend walking tours that take three hours are available year-round at this lighthouse, which has remained in continuous operation since 1889. The light sits 361 feet above sea level on volcanic rock. The tours fill up early, so it's recommended that you arrive 30 minutes prior to each tour.

Andrew Molera State Park
Miles of trails wind through meadows, beaches and hilltops that make this undeveloped park popular for beachcombing, hiking, and biking. There are primitive campsites available and registration is first come, first served.

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park
Hikers can enjoy the many scenic trails, including a self-guided nature trail in this scenic park teeming with biodiversity. Meeting space and a grocery store is located in the Big Sur Lodge, and Wi-Fi access is available near the Camp Store.

Hearst Castle
“Conceived in Europe. Made in California.” Hearst Castle is located only six miles from Fireside Inn. People travel from all over the world to experience this phenomenal monument to excess built over a twenty year period by publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst.
