Twelve miles north of the Best Western Fireside Inn, you’ll find the Piedras Blancas elephant seal rookery. This is truly a spectacle of nature not to be missed, as it is a rare opportunity to witness elephant seals in their natural environment. Throughout the year, elephant seals come ashore at Piedras Blancas to rest or mate. This colony is one of the few places in the world where elephant seals can be seen from such a short distance. Bring along a jacket, because even in the warmer months, the breeze can be a bit chilly.
Remember that you should view the seals only from designated areas. Occasionally, the seals will come onto the walkway, and if you observe this, please remain outside the gate. It is best to keep a respectful distance since even the youngest animals can be dangerous. Also, please do not bring your pets with you when you view the seals.
